A New Name

Can you imagine? We are told in Genesis that God, our Father, created day and night, the son and the moon, the land and the sea, and all the stars. In Genesis 1:14, God created the stars “for signs and for seasons, and for days, and for years”. Do you stop often to look up into the night sky? There are millions of stars, planets, and galaxies shining down on us. Have you ever tried to count them? There are so many, it would be impossible. And yet, we are told in Psalms 147:4, “He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names”. Our God has a special name for every one of the stars. He sees each individual star, He knows where they are, how bright they are shining, and He remembers His special name for each of them.
Can you imagine? The best is yet to come. Psalms 8:3-4 says, “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?” Our same God, who created the entire universe, created each one of us as an individual. He knows where we are and how bright we are shining. Most importantly, though, He knows each of us by name.  Can you imagine? The God of the universe has a special name just for you. It is a name that only He knows. “Therefore if any man be in Christ he is a new creature: old things are passed away, behold, all things are new” (II Corinthians 5:17).When we become God’s children through Christ, we are a new person. A new creature needs a new name, right? Revelation 3:12 holds this special promise for us. “Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out, and I will write upon him the name of my God, which is the new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name”. Did you catch that? God has a new name for each of us that overcometh the world. We know how to overcome the world. Christ has overcome sin in the world (John 16:33) and we can overcome that sin as well, if we call Him Saviour. One we call Him Saviour, we are called into the Family of God and given a new name, one that God has reserved especially for us.
Can you imagine? Friends, at the very next chance you get, head outside and stare into the night sky. Imagine a God who knows how many stars there are and knows each of them by name. And then, meditate upon the reality that this very same God has a special name just for you. What a gift! Pray that God draws you very close to Him. Pray that He causes you to be mindful of the very special place you hold in His heart. Finally, thank Him for his Son, who carved out that special place just for you!
