Sirs, what must I do to be saved? In the book of Acts and the 16 th chapter we read the account of the Philippian Jailer who came face to face with this question. Paul and Silas had been thrown into prison for serving the Lord. Along about midnight there was an earthquake and the jail shook apart leaving Paul and Silas free. There was a Philippian Jailer who was charged with keeping Paul and Silas bound. When he saw they were free he knew that their release would cost him his life at the hands of very cruel men. So, he drew back his sword to kill himself when Paul cried with a loud voice, ” Do thyself no harm; for we are all here. ” The obvious touch of God on their lives and their reaction to being free struck the heart of the Phillipian Jailer. He knew there was something different about these men and he wanted desperately to have what they had so he said, ” Sirs, what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. ”
(John 3:4-7) Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. (KJV)
Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. He had witnessed the works of Christ and knew that there was something very special about Him. His presence and His works made Nicodemus want a relationship with Him. When Nicodemus questioned Jesus about being born again, Jesus answered Him, ” Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again .” In essence Nicodemus was asking Jesus the very same question that the Philippian Jailer had asked. Nicodemus was wanting to know how to be saved and the answer for Nicodemus was the same as for the Philippian Jailer. They both needed a personal relationship with Christ that was built on faith in Him. One met Jesus in the line of duty. Another met Jesus as He sought Him out due to the wonder of who Jesus was.
What is your story? Can you like the Philippian Jailer proclaim with all assurance that Jesus is your Saviour? Have you met Him face to face and accepted His wonderful love, mercy and grace? Oh my friend, if not, I have good news. ( For He saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2 KJV) At this very moment you can fall out to sin and fall in love with Jesus. You can give your heart to the One who died for you. Romans 3:23 says, ” For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; ” Each of us must come to the realization that we are a sinner in need of a Saviour. We must understand that our sinful lives will lead to destruction but by placing our faith in a God that can not fail we will have eternal life. ” For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord ” (Romans 6:23). ” But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us ” (Romans 5:8 KJV). You could not pay the sin debt but He paid it for you. He has offered it free and clear to everyone who will believe. ” For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved (Romans 10:13). ” For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast ” (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV). ” For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life ” (John 3:16 KJV). ” That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation ” (Romans 10:9-10 KJV). Are you saved? This is the all-important question! Your answer determines your eternity! Come join me in my Father’s house! The door is open but only to those who believe.
