Bible Bits are short devotions, sent as a text messages each morning, M-F, at 8:00 AM.

In Bible Bits, we’re working our way through a study on Philippians 4:8. Here is yesterday’s Bible Bit. (You can sign up to receive Bible Bits here – https://opturl.com/pdWNMLwb)

Philippians 4:8 commands us, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”  As we continue our study on Philippians 4:8, we will concentrate on things that are pure.

“The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the Lord: but the words of the pure are pleasant words” (Proverbs 15:26).  Those who are pure are living a Godly life which reflects the character of God.  As such, the words of the pure are clean, uplifting, sowing peace and giving encouragement.  The pure speak the truth in love and can be trusted.

It is a truth that what we think we often speak.  So those thinking on those things which are pure will speak in such a way that God interprets as pleasant.  How are your words?  Are they sharp and bitter?  Are your words divisive and hateful?  Do your words reflect you are a child of God? Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. “Our words say a lot about us.  They often reveal our character, our morals, and our motives.  Ephesians 4:29 commands us to not let unwholesome, foul, profane or vulgar words ever come out of our mouths.  We are instead to use words that are good for building up others.

A pure person is one whose words are a blessing to those who hear them.  One can’t have pure speech without thinking pure thoughts.  So, as you begin to assess your words and how they are pleasing to the Lord, I encourage you to fill your mind with things that are pure.  Dwell on the Word of God.  Practice the fruits of the Spirit and surrender your heart, your mind, and your will to the Lord.  Let Him control your speech and make sure all that you say gives honor and glory to your heavenly Father.  What do your words say about you and your love for God?  Remember you are loved.  Jesus loves you.
