Noisy Distractions

Earlier today, I heard something that I rarely do in today’s world of “smart” gadgets, technology and electronics.  I was in my living room with no gadgets running – no TV, phone, music, dishwasher…nothing – and all the sudden I realized how quiet the house was.  Then suddenly I heard my wall clock ticking and ticking and ticking away.  It’s the only wall clock I have in the whole house.  I also have one at work, but I can’t recall ever hearing it tick due to coworkers, copiers, fax machines, heaters, papers shuffling, phones ringing and people that inundate my office!

When that ticking clock caught my attention today, I realized how rarely I actually hear that; yet, it is always there.  Most often I don’t realize it’s even there, but it certainly is.  Other noises and distractions follow us so often wherever we go, masking sounds like a clock’s ticking.

Hearing that clock tick made me think of how God’s voice can seem in our lives.  We – unknowingly – can fill our ears up with all the distractions life can offer, which causes us to miss hearing God’s voice.  It’s still present, but we simply don’t hear His voice.  He is consistently there with us just like the ticking of a clock is consistent.

How sad to think that we miss out on hearing God’s voice sometimes because our ears are cluttered with distractions!  We need to be still and hear His voice!  “Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth,” Psalm 46:10 tells us!  Let’s try this week to decrease the noisy distractions.  Then, we will then be able to hear God’s voice and draw closer to Him!
