Be Still

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth,” (Psalm 46:10)

Daily our senses are overloaded. Our eyes are enticed by everything imaginable and in today’s world walking down the street will produce sights that grieve the spirit. Our ears are introduced to language that is harsh, vulgar, and otherwise inappropriate. Our noses smell the odor of death and destruction. Our hands deliver messages with ungodly content, strike our brother and devise mischief. And our tongues experience the taste of sin through alcohol, tobacco and drugs. It seems that when we leave our home we are simply bombarded by sin and debauchery. Ephesians 2:2 says, ” Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:” He may be the prince of the power of the air but satan has no hold on you. ” In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us,” (Romans 8:37).

The devil uses many devices to try and move our focus from God. He puts many things in our paths to distract us from the love of God and the awareness of Christ’s provisions for us. The devil often uses multiple avenues to attack us and in doing so creates enormous stress in our lives. Isaiah 26:3 says, ” Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Why is it then that we seem to stay so worried, angry and upset? It is because we leave our first love, which is Christ and begin to move, operate and live out of a survival mode. We are tricked by the devil into believing that we are the only ones looking out for ourselves. We incorrectly believe that in our strength alone we can take care of ourselves. These false notions do not appear overnight but are built layer by layer by the crafty hands of the devil. You see we move over and allow him to build in our heart and mind. We clear space for his construction that will surely lead to destruction. How do we do this you ask? We do it by staying so busy that we don’t take the time to read His Word, invite Him into our day or just spend time communing with Him. The chaos and turmoil of our lives lead us continually downward by distracting our attention from Him.

So, what can we do to stop the devil from taking up residence in our heart? We must shove the world out. We must stop the devil in his tracks and give him the boot out of our heart and mind. We can only do this through the power and might of Jesus Christ (Philippians 4:13, 19). I John 4:4 says, ” Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world .”

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth (Psalm 46:10). Wow just reading this precious verse from God’s Holy Word brings peace to your heart and mind. When you take the time to really know God your faith increases abundantly. When you know Him you are intensely aware of all He is doing for you, of all He can do and of the power of His love for you. Your trust and obedience to Him is freely given because knowing Him brings joy unspeakable and full of glory (I Peter 1:8). By believing in Him you will unleash the power of your faith. He will raise you above your cares and strifes and beyond your biggest foe. He is exalted above all and one day ” . at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:10-11). Even the winds and waves obey His voice, ” And He awoke, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still ” (Mark 4:39). I don’t know what the storms are in your life. I don’t know what trouble and chaos is lurking in your world. But, I do know that when He calmed the sea He said “Peace” followed by “be still.” So, when the angry waves roll over your soul, just “BE STILL!”
